Mr. Water Mist checks his last nozzle

What job gives you 33 years onboard cruise ships and million-dollar yachts on duty for Danfoss? Ask Ib Rene Sonnenborg.
Brazil, Guatemala, Panama, USA, Spain, Italy, Slovenia, Japan, China, Egypt….
68-year-old Ib Rene Sonnenborg sighs, then stops recalling all the countries he’s visited during his career as Technical Supervisor in Danfoss Fire Safety. But he knows the total: it’s 83. And, looking back, he describes his work life in Danfoss as extraordinary.
“I’ve spent an enormous amount of time onboard cruise ships, yachts, and liners. I’ve seen flyfish, dolphins, whales. Still, it’s been no holiday. The job has been demanding, with responsibility that you can’t take lightly. It’s been about saving lives with Danfoss products. And this, more than anything, has given the job purpose and meaning.”
Ib Rene’s main task has been to service Danfoss’ SEM-SAFE® water mist fire suppression system in marine applications worldwide, primarily ships.
Atomizing water into mist
Using high-pressure spray-nozzles, the system atomizes water into a dense mist that immediately cools flames and prevents them from breathing.
An average-size cruise ship needs a thousand nozzles or more for effective fire protection. Ib Rene dismounts between 60 to 80 random nozzles on each annual service check looking for signs of corrosion and blockages. He also tests the nozzles’ reaction to flames, smoke, and heat. He tests water supply, pump pressures, and more.
So, he typically needs to stay onboard for days as the ship sails from a to b.
“I start in one area systematically working myself through the ship. Mostly, it’s just me and my toolbox. Some would call it a lonely job. But I like it, being my own boss. And I have my own cabin to sleep in and access to the restaurant buffets. I’ve always regarded this a fantastic perk,” says Ib Rene.
The backside has been all the time away from his family. As he passed age 60, his body was no longer too fond of all the running through airports and train terminals either.
Ib Rene's last service trip sailing from Gibraltar, Spain, to Ravenna, Italy:
Previous Next
More office, less airport
So, at 63, he asked his department director Henrik Bygbjerg if he could possibly find more use for him in the office and less onboard the cruise ships.
“I will never forget his reaction. ‘Stop thinking so much about what Danfoss needs. Think about what you need,’ he said. It’s the kind of thing that makes me proud to work for Danfoss. It’s the reason I’ve stayed on till 68 instead of retiring sooner. It’s the reason I’ve continued to like working,” Ib Rene explains.
Since then, his onboard service trips have been down to two or three annually. Instead, he provides technical service to colleagues in the field from his office at Danfoss Fire Safety’s headquarters in Odense, Denmark.
Ib Rene Sonnenborg joined the company in 1991 – back then as part of Semco Maritime A/S whose fire safety division Danfoss bought in 2006 to form Danfoss Fire Safety.
Andrew Bates (left), Head of Aftermarket, Danfoss Fire Safety, supported Ib Rene’s wish to spend more time in the office. “Ib Rene knows every step up and down these ships. Blindfold him, and he will still know. So, no one is better at providing back-office support to younger colleagues in the field. They see him as a father figure - experienced, calm, modest. You just want to keep a guy like Ib Rene on the team as long as possible - on terms that works for him. Right: Henrik Bygbjerg.
Ib Rene looks forward to spending more time with his wife, two grown children, and grandchildren. His last workday will be in November. “But it won’t be a goodbye to sailing. I own a tiny boat and love spending time on it with both family and friends. When I am on that boat, I relax,” Ib Rene says.
Facts:
Danfoss Fire Safety’s key products are the SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist system and the SEM-SAFE® low-pressure CO2 system.
The former uses high-pressure spray nozzles to create a dense water mist which quickly covers flames, so they suffocate. The water in the mist also effectively absorbs heat from a fire, so it loses energy. One advantage of the SEM-SAFE® nozzles is that they extinguish a fire using much less water than traditional sprinkler systems, thereby minimizing the risk of water damage.
The SEM-SAFE® low-pressure CO2 system uses carbon dioxide to replace oxygen where a fire has caught on. The method is extremely effective, but mostly suitable in areas with no human presence as CO2 in high concentrations can be hazardous.

While many spend their summer holidays by the beach, a few choose to push their limits and do incredible things. Our amazing colleague, David Sherrington, Project Engineer at Danfoss Fire Safety, is one of those few.
David recently took part in the 1st chapter of the VIA ultra race – a 4,000 km, unsupported biking adventure across Europe! This first chapter drew inspiration from Hannibal’s (the Carthaginian general) legendary march to Italy (218 BC). This race is no ordinary ride, as riders must carry everything, they need themselves, resupply at local shops and cafes along the way, and plan their own routes between checkpoints. Apart from crossing mountain range and experience stunning landscapes and sunsets, the race also included:
- Full distance: 4,000 km / 39,000 m ascent.
- Route: From Cartagena, Spain to Giovinazzo, Italy.
- David completed: 3,260 km / 34,000 m ascent (with a well-deserved train ride from Florence).
- Time: No official limit, but the finishers’ party was 14 days after the starts.
- Temperatures: Ranged from 12°C to 42°C.
- Countries: Spain, France, and Italy.
Next year’s adventure continues with Chapter 2, themed around Germanicus (Roman general and politician), taking riders through Italy, Germany, and Holland. Huge congratulations to David for this epic achievement!

Throwback to an eventful last week at the
Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) Performance-Based Design (PBD) Conference and Exhibition in Copenhagen, Denmark. This premier event gathered 300 fire professionals and enthusiasts to discuss new fire safety technologies, methods, processes, and materials for safer buildings. During the event, we were incredibly sad to witness Børsen, the old Stock Exchange House and one of Denmark’s most iconic and historic buildings, burn into flames. The 400-year-old building was well recognized in the Copenhagen skyline, due to its dragon-tailed spire. This unfortunate event reinforces the importance of protecting historical buildings with reliable fire safety solutions. Forums, like the ones provided by SFPE, are thus essential to sharing knowledge and taking action. During the SFPE congress, we tackled the benefits behind our SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist solution for key applications, such as heritage, hospitals, mass timber buildings, tunnels, and parking garages with electric vehicles, to name just a few. If you design data centres, you will have noticed that facilities are getting bigger – and hotter. As a result, data centre cooling is evolving towards new techniques that provide effective, sustainable, and cost-effective cooling that maintains the right temperature, even as server rack power continues to grow. But no matter which cooling technology is used at the facility, high-pressure water mist systems are evolving too in order to continue to provide efficient fire suppression and thus remains the key to optimal fire safety design in any data centre.Growing industry, growing demands
The data centre industry is growing rapidly – as are the demands placed on it. The increasing adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), cloud services, edge computing, and the Internet of Things (IoT) means that the need for storage space and processing power is skyrocketing. Server racks are getting more powerful, but their increasing power density also means higher rack temperatures. At the same time, data centre owners and operators need to minimise operating costs and reduce power consumption as much as possible to minimise the climate impact of their systems to comply with client expectations and sustainability legislation.Evolution driven by power density
Adopting new cooling techniques is a good solution to these challenges. Liquid cooling such as direct-to-chip cooling and immersion cooling offers high performance plus efficiency improvements that can increase power usage effectiveness (PUE) and reduce climate impact. This evolution is largely driven by increasing power density: With the more powerful, and hotter, server racks being deployed, traditional air cooling including CRAC (computer room air conditioning) and CRAH (computer room air handling) in many cases is no longer sufficient. Liquid cooling, by contrast, offers the required performance.- In direct-to-chip cooling, small pipes deliver liquid coolant directly to the server motherboard. The liquid absorbs processor heat which is then transported out of the server and evaporated (using a chilled-water loop or similar).
- In immersion cooling, the server itself is submerged into liquid coolant, for example mineral oil or another dielectric liquid. The coolant is pumped through an evaporator system, efficiently removing the heat from the server hardware.
Varying risk profiles
But how exactly do cooling methods affect fire protection? Do they make any difference? It depends on how the data centre is designed. Data centre designers take many different approaches to cooling depending on their targets, and the risk profile depends very much on the actual design in each case. A couple of examples:- If air cooling is used, how are the airflows designed? Does the cooling system use forced ventilation, and does it use hot and cold aisles? What role do the airflows play in a fire – and how do you design a fire suppression system that delivers the required performance in each case?
- If the data centre relies on immersion cooling, what liquid is being used? Some dielectric fluids have a flash point low enough for them to constitute a fire hazard. And what would happen if unforeseen events or mechanical failure were to result in liquid leakage or heating?
In any case, the increased temperatures in modern data centres constitutes an increased risk. If the cooling system fails, today’s high-powered data centre server racks will quickly rise to higher temperatures, increasing the risk of asset breakdowns – and of fire. [caption id="attachment_14372" align="alignnone" width="700"]
FM Approvals data centre halls - below floor double tier cable trays fire test[/caption]
High-pressure water mist remains effective
Fortunately, the wide variety of cooling technologies and general design principles doesn’t have to give the fire safety designer sleepless nights: In a changing data centre industry, high-pressure water mist systems remain a reliable method for suppressing data centre fires. When activated, a high-pressure water mist system emits a fine mist of water droplets through a localised section of nozzles. The droplets attack two elements of the fire triangle, removing both oxygen and heat and combining the suppression effect of gas and traditional sprinkler systems. In data centre applications, high-pressure water mist has several benefits over gas or sprinklers. It uses less water, reducing damage to data centre assets. Only the nozzles in the affected area are activated, further reducing water consumption. And because the system uses only clean water, it is harmless to humans, and excess water can quickly be removed after a fire, shortening downtime. The physical properties of high-pressure water mist systems mean that they are capable of handling any type of data centre fire. This applies to all commercially available solutions that conform to the FM 5560 Approval Standard for Water Mist Systems (Appendix M and N), and some manufacturers go beyond that basic requirement. The nozzles of the SEM-SAFE® system from Danfoss Fire Safety, for example, have been tested and approved for higher nozzle release temperatures, allowing for an increase in the ambient temperature within the data halls. This reduces demand on the cooling system and minimises cooling system energy consumption significantly. As new cooling methods introduce these challenges in fire protection, whether that be from increase air velocities, liquid cooling, or higher temperatures, Danfoss Fire Safety works with third parties to evaluate its solutions, such as tests from FM 5560 Data Centre tests (Appendix M and N) and additional fire tests with RISE Fire Research in Norway.Additional benefits with future-proof technology
In addition to reliable fire suppression, high-pressure water mist systems provide other benefits to the fire system designer, installer, and data centre operator: The small pipe size and compact pump units typically used make the solutions easy to integrate and install. And their low water and reduction in raw materials makes them a good match for clients looking to reduce their climate footprint. You may find yourself faced with many different rack space and cooling system designs, and with the need to design and install fire protection systems that deliver satisfactory performance for all of them. High-pressure water mist has been an excellent choice for fire extinguishing systems in data centres for years. As the industry evolves to tackle new challenges and client demands, the technology remains the key to ensuring adequate fire safety. [caption id="attachment_14374" align="alignnone" width="700"]

Then save the dates and pack your bags for Data Centre World Paris conference and exhibition.
On the 23rd of November, Data Centre World Paris opens its doors to the biggest players in the data centre industry. Engineers, innovators and suppliers will gather to discuss the most exciting data centre technologies.
Join us in uncovering the benefits of high-pressure water mist technology for fire safety in data centre
We teamed up with Polytech Protection Industrie, an official Danfoss Fire Safety Partner and Installer in France for SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist fire suppression system.
We welcome you to visit our stand K62 and learn from our experts about the latest high-pressure water mist product developments to boost performance, reduce water consumption and contribute to energy efficiency in your data centre.
We will be demonstrating how the excellent properties of water mist droplets can keep water damage to a minimum in a data centre and we will be showcasing our FM approved solution for data centre fire safety.
Click here to get your free entry ticket What is SEM-SAFE® system for fire protection
SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist systems are suitable for protecting an entire mission-critical data facility, including double tier cable trays, data processing equipment rooms or halls, and sub-floors.
In addition, SEM-SAFE® systems comprise a high-pressure modular pump unit, section valves, piping, and water mist nozzles. The pump unit has a compact design, low weight, small footprint and an easy configuration to fit the data center’s need for expansion.
Moreover the SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water systems use water micro-droplets released through the nozzle into protected areas. An ultra-fine mist is formed with a two-fold extinguishing effect. In addition to cooling the flames, it simultaneously starves the fire of oxygen. The cooling effect also lowers the risk of re-ignition, protects against heat damage, and hinders fire spreading.
Features and benefits
- Minimum downtime
- Low water consumption
- Ventilation can be kept running
- Lower total cost of ownership
- Small pump and water tank footprint

Digitalisation has stretched to every corner of our business and has made it possible to accomplish things that a decade ago would have required travelling and the use of conventional methods. Keep the business going- safety, steadily & remotely
“With the use of digital tools & assets, we can reach and service customers anywhere in the world and improve our response time. Knowledge sharing, networking and fun are key ingredients for a productive meeting.
Top that up with some very enthusiastic colleagues and one might understand how well the Danfoss UK quarterly meeting went. The meeting gathered colleagues from all Danfoss segments, with expertise in areas such as fixed fire safety, heating, drives, cooling and power. During networking, one objective was to discuss how to align the Danfoss solution portfolio to fit the UK building requirements, providing more solutions to our customers and consultants. The central platform would allow us to assist specifiers with BIM models, data sheets and case material. Lewis Oxley, UK
Sales Manager at Danfoss Fire Safety presented to the other segments how our SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist system works and why it is the perfect fire safety solution for protecting people and assets in any type of building in case of a fire. “The staff at Danfoss UK made me feel very welcome and feedback on the presentation was very positive. Danfoss Fire Safety Partner Seminar 2019

Fun, networking and solid business relationships are key… View
Fun, networking and solid business relationships are key ingredients for a successful Danfoss Fire Safety Partner Seminar The Danfoss Fire Safety Partner Seminar took place from 15 to 16 October 2019 in Poland. It was our pleasure to welcome 80 participants representing 28 Partner companies from 23 countries. At Danfoss Fire Safety, we call our
distributors from the “
land” market (buildings & industry) ‘Partners’. The seminar is a platform for sharing news with our Partners, getting direct feedback from them, but it is also a great way to socialize and have some fun.
Day 1 took place at the Danfoss Grodzisk Mazowiecki Poland office.Adam Jedrzejczak, President of Danfoss EER Region, gave us an insight into the “muscle” power behind Danfoss. Our R&D department released a brand-new
3D Product Configurator Tool. The tool is embedded in our www.semsafe.danfoss.com homepage. It offers a simple and transparent product portfolio. The 3D models are available 24/7 with accurate dimensions and comprehensive, up-to-date technical data. With this tool, we are truly putting digitalisation at the fingertips of our Partners by giving them the possibility to configure and preview the product with a single click. Partners can use it together with their own customers, for example architects, for a full hands-on digital experience.
Day 2 took place in Warsaw, where we saw the installation of the
SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist system in the Varso high-rise building, an iconic landmark in Warsaw, currently under construction. Once completed, Varso tower will be the tallest building in Poland and the European Union. We are extremely proud that our
SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist system ensures optimum fire safety of people and assets in this impressive building. For more information about Varso tower, please visit the
Varso homepage. Passion for the fire safety business and the people behind it is the driver motivating us to create this kind of event. The first Partner Seminar was organised in 2010 and since then it has become an annual event, lasting 2 days. During this seminar. we get the chance to meet face-to-face with the Partners we speak to on a daily basis. This has a positive impact on our communication with Partners, creates strong business relationships and enables the exchange of information.
Thank you to our Partners for participating! For more information about the seminar, please contact

A successful 2-day service engineer training seminar

July proved to be a busy, yet productive month for Danfoss Fire Safety A/S. We are very glad to have completed another successful training seminar focused on operation and maintenance of SEM-SAFE
® high-pressure water mist systems.
Peter M. Knudsen, Market Solution Manager & Leader in our
SEM-SAFE® Academy Training Program is very satisfied with the outcome of the recent training. "We just completed a successful 2-day partner service engineer training seminar in our headquarters in Odense, Denmark. There were 8 service engineers participating from 7 of our great partners in Europe; MARANG Brandschutz & Technologie GmbH, and Multimon Industrieanlagen GmbH from Germany, Dunamenti from Hungary, Unica Fire Safety from the Netherlands, Fireworks from the UK, Automatic Fire from Ireland and GM sprinkler from Poland. We covered much of the huge “Operation & Maintenance” subject, a lot about control of the pump unit, details and function of each tiny Danfoss component, and changing of the high-pressure pumps in a unit. The immediate feedback we received from our enthusiastic, and indeed interesting, participants was overwhelming... thank you all for that!", says Peter M. Knudsen.
The Danfoss SEM-SAFE® Academy
This training seminar is part of our SEM-SAFE
® Academy programme, which we organise periodically in Danfoss Fire Safety. The SEM-SAFE
® Academy comprises several training modules which focus on, for example, sales training, basic and advanced introduction to the SEM-SAFE

Best fire suppression system for Data Centre
Published 26 February 2019
Technological advances in fire suppression for data centres… View
Technological advances in fire suppression for data centres over the last 20 years mean that gas & chemical-based solutions developments are becoming obsolete. Amongst their disadvantages are the facts that they usually involve releasing chemicals over a wide area and require ventilation systems to be shut down to remove oxygen. Electrical supply often has to be cut & clean-up operations take time. Staff safety, damage limitation & the amount of downtime are all major disadvantages with these traditional solutions. More & more data centres have therefore been turning to high-pressure water mist solutions. These systems comprise a tailor-made network of nozzles, which release micro-fine particles of water exactly at the point of the incident. While the localised fire is quickly extinguished, the remainder of the data centre’s operations and equipment remain unaffected & can be kept up & running. The solution is completely harmless to staff and equipment & clean up is swift.
High pressure water mist fire suppression - how it works
The key benefit of high-pressure water mist fire suppression solutions are the extremely low levels of water used. Using a high-pressure pump, clean water is forced through a specially designed, tested network of stainless steel pipework and nozzles at 60 or 100bar. The microfine water droplets emitted have sizes ranging from 50 to 200 µm. They quickly vaporise to cool and extinguish the fire, by displacing the oxygen around the fire zone. With this localised response, only the nozzle at the affected point is triggered and hardly any trace of water remains after activation. The area does not need to be sealed in the same way that a gas suppression system requires and ventilation does not need to be turned off. Energy supply and business operations can continue as usual.
Proven experience in data centres
Danfoss is a global leader in the sale, development, production and service/commissioning of certified fixed fire fighting systems under the brand name
SEM-SAFE®. Innovation is our approach. Our
SEM-SAFE® system for data centres uses high-pressure water mist. We have been engineering and pioneering SEM-SAFE® fire fighting systems for decades and have successfully designed and installed systems in major data centres.
Data Centre World London

Danfoss is participating here with Fireworks, our official business Partner for UK market. “Fireworks was the first company to install high-pressure water mist solutions for data centres in the UK” said Derek Killaspy, Managing Director of Fireworks. “Moreover, major data centres around the world have put their confidence in the Danfoss
SEM-SAFE® systems that we work with. Each year on our exhibition stand with Danfoss at Data Centre World, we are continuing to see even more interest for our solutions.” For more information on the

High-pressure water mist for metro stations

Better fire protection for metros and suburbain rail… View
Better fire protection for metros and suburbain rail
Our society is characterized by a transportation system that expands daily, contributing to our modern living. In some of the biggest metro stations in the world, millions of people transit every hour. In such crowded places, ensuring people’s safety can be a challenge. The passengers only transit the area, most of them without knowledge on what are the fire escape procedures. Metros are also poorly ventilated, which can easily lead to radiant heat and smoke being amplified. It is a prerequisite for metros to be equipped with a reliable fire protection system that will make evacuation of people possible and facilitate the access for the fire fighting crew. Rigorous tests have proven that SEM-SAFE
® high-pressure water mist system is the optimum fire fighting system for protecting these critical transit areas.
Marton Horvath, Country Manager at Danfoss Fire Fighting, presented the test results and benefits of SEM-SAFE
® for metro stations and suburban rail at the RIFA
Annual General Meeting.Danfoss Fire Fighting attends RIFA Annual General Meeting
RIFA (Rail Industry Fire Association) Annual General Meeting was held on the 14
th of July 2017 in London. The main objective of RIFA is that of knowledge and best practice sharing in the field of fire safety for the railway industry. As a voice for norms concerning fire safety, the association's annual meeting serves as a platform for experts to meet and discuss fire safety. The event was very well attended and included a number of presentations and a fire test in the Burn Hall. Marton Horvath has chosen as a case study the famous Budapest Metro system, which is protected by a SEM-SAFE
® high-pressure water mist system. Fire test for cable tunnels and under carriage space protection demonstrated the excellent properties and benefits of SEM-SAFE

Over the last 12 months, Danfoss Semco has been updating its data base of vessels which has Danfoss Semco fixed fire fighting systems installed onboard. The new data base ensures that we assist those vessel owners and vessel operators in a more pro-active and solution orientated way, says Andrew Bates. For our contract customers, the new data base helps in keeping their vessel or fleet of vessels in good operational conditions with respect to the fixed fire fighting system. We expect to have more vessels and fleets of vessels signing service contracts with us once they see the benefits of this updated data base, Henrik Bygbjerg explains.

With the current global turmoil and increasing nationalism we praise our diversity in nationality, age, religion and gender.
Danfoss Semco systems are used world-wide. From Canada to Australia, from the artic to South Africa. Our environment is truly global and so are our customers. Naturally our organisation should reflect this. Contrary to resent movements that alienate specific nationalities and foreigners in general, we embrace diversity. We believe that different cultures as well as diversity in background, nationality, gender and age provides a much more dynamic and inspiring workplace. Being inspired and working in a non-homogenous environment provides better and safer solutions for our customers. When we hire new employees, we select candidates based on competences, values and strong business ethics. This is the only way to foster superior performance. Our ambition is to be successful, not as a result of tariffs and trade barriers, but because we understand the customer and provide the right, easy and safe solution. We will make the world a safer place and hope our customers will see Danfoss Semco as the No.1 choice.

Being proud of your company and product means you deliver better quality
Why is it important that our piping runs straight and parallel? Why do we take time to design our units with protected wirering? This question may be asked by some. It does not impact the operation of our system or necessarily increase the life expectancy. BUT we take pride in our Scandinavian design history and the high craftsmanship that is a trademark of Denmark and Danfoss Semco. All dials and controls should be in the same location for better user interface. Our products should be easy and safe to install. Danfoss Semco does not deliver kits and boxes. We supply complete skid mounted units that have been thoroughly tested in our facility to guarantee superior performance. Should anything break after many years of operation, our stringent design will make troubleshooting and repair much simpler. Quality is not only a task for the control department. It is in the Danfoss Semco DNA. From design and procurement through manufacturing by highly skilled craftsmen to final commissioning by our experienced Service Engineers on site. Our ambition is to deliver the right, easy & safe solution to our customers making us the No. 1 choice in fire fighting.

Danfoss Semco & TFRI demonstrates the use of WM in heritage buildings
Published 25 November 2016
Danfoss Semco and their local partner NDN have,… View
Danfoss Semco and their local partner NDN have, in close collaboration with the Tianjin Fire Research Institute of the Ministry of Public Security, established a demonstration mock-up for heritage buildings. The site is located at the TFRI fire testing center in Tianjin, China. Parameters such as activation time, spray pattern and water consumption can easily be demonstrated to fire marshals, design institutes and other government bodies. Overall, the test illustrates that the SEM-SAFE
® high-pressure water mist system from Danfoss Semco is the optimal fire-fighting solution for heritage applications. Most buildings classified as heritage buildings were constructed before the time of fire codes and contain highly combustible materials. Wood structures are always a concern and have a high fire risk. High-pressure water mist is increasingly in demand for protecting these sensitive applications. The tests performed are the result of the need to maximize the fire safety of valuable structures.
Safe and reliable
The SEM-SAFE
® high-pressure water mist system activates immediately upon fire detection. It is harmless to humans and uses a 100% environmentally friendly extinguishing agent.
Perfect for retrofit projects and wood structures
The SEM-SAFE
® high-pressure water mist system uses high-quality stainless steel pipes that have a small diameter. They are light and can easily be bent to fit in tight spaces. The SEM-SAFE
® high-pressure water mist nozzles have an aesthetic design that fits with historical and modern design interiors.
Limited water consumption
Due to the minimum water consumption, the SEM-SAFE
® high-pressure water mist system weighs very little. This makes it possible to install the system in areas where only lightweight systems can be used. Also, in cases of activation, the water damage is kept to a minimum.
Extensive track record for heritage buildings in Europe
In Europe, Danfoss Semco has an extensive track record of SEM-SAFE
® high-pressure water mist installations in heritage buildings, such as: the Budapest Parliament in Hungary, Comparto San Paolo Modena historical library in Italy, Teatro Comunale Ponchielli Cremona in Italy, Havnbjerg Mølle mill museum in Denmark, Gamle Gård Kristiansand museum in Norway, Ten Trinity Square in London, United Kingdom. Tianjin Fire Research Institute (TFRI) The Tianjin Fire Research Institute of the Ministry of Public Security (TFRI), established in 1965, is a comprehensive and internationally famous fire science research institute, which has professional staff capable of independent innovation and a top-ranking, comprehensive test base. The research areas of TFRI include building fire protection and prevention technology, fire engineering technology, fire theory research, fire-cause analysis and determination, fire code and standardization, fire testing technologies and soft-science fire research, etc. To learn more about TFRI, click

Staying healthy and fit not only makes sense, but it also enables you to perform better
All companies strive for superior performance. There are many ways to improve performance. In Danfoss Semco we work both on the hard and the soft side. Naturally staying loyal to our strategy is very import and so is using the large Danfoss tool box to optimize all processes in the firm. However staying healthy and fit is equally important. That is one of the reasons we have a running club in Danfoss Semco. The goal is always to have more participants in the annual ”Eventyrløb” (the fairytale run named after Hans Christian Andersen who was born in Odense). Danfoss Semco has participated in the run for more than 10 years and 2016 saw the highest number of participants ever. 42 employees and family members, ranging from 1 year to 54 years, enjoyed a nice day with hot dogs and drinks after the run.

2015 was the best year ever for Danfoss Semco

We need a strong performance, so we can invest in the future
Danfoss Semco has, over the past four years, been on a journey to transform the company to be at the absolute forefront of the water mist business. Not only have we increased our gross profit by 74% during this period, but we have also significantly improved delivery performance while launching a range of new products. At the same time we have invested heavily in product development and approvals. In 2015 we had our highest investment rate ever. As the market continues to grow we will see more and more standards being implemented. We see this as a natural evolution that ensures that only high quality manufacturers, like Danfoss Semco, that focus on safety and performance, are allowed to supply fire fighting systems. Furthermore it provides documentation of the superior performance of the High Pressure Water mist technology. However fire testing is very costly, ranging from 0.5mio. EUR for small tests to in excess of 3mio.EUR for larger tests. So for Danfoss Semco to stay at the forefront we need superior performance in all aspects of our business.

Spring of 2016 has proven to be very busy for Danfoss Semco in China. Danfoss Semco was an active participant and key note presenter at the
“Annual Conference of Shanghai Architectural Society of Building Water Supply & Drainage Branch”. The Architectural Society of Shanghai China is an academic society founded in 1953, which brings together construction experts from all sorts of branches.
The conferences organized by the association are very well known in East China. This year the event took place in the Shanghai Modern Design Institute, attracting elite architects, structural engineers and various building suppliers. Fire fighting in buildings was among the “hot” topics on this year’s program. The main objective of Danfoss Semco was to convince an audience of more than 200 people of the benefits of the SEM-SAFE
® high-pressure water mist system for fire fighting in any type of building.
Mission accomplished! The event was a success. Mr Michal Zhang, general manager of ICAN Shanghai, one of Danfoss Semco’s official distributors in China, introduced the SEM-SAFE
® high-pressure water mist system as one of the most advanced fire fighting technologies. Besides being a reliable system, the SEM-SAFE
® system respects the integrity of a building. Putting out the fire in seconds, without using any chemical additives and with minimal consumption of water and close to no water damage, it is one of the most environmentally-friendly and efficient fire fighting systems available, and is totally safe for human beings. The presentations and discussions that took place during the seminar have led to a high interest in high-pressure water mist. As a results several more seminars and trainings are already being discussed, where Danfoss Semco can take the opportunity to explain the details behind the high–pressure water mist technology and present the track record of projects where SEM-SAFE
® has been installed worldwide.
Mr Michal Zhang, general manager of ICAN Shanghai, spreading the word about one of the best fire fighting systems in the market: SEM-SAFE®

Water mist pioneer, Jens Jepsen, is retiring after 26 years

After working with water mist from the very beginning, Jens Jepsen has decided to retire at the end of April 2016.
Jens Jepsen started developing the SEM-SAFE® water mist system in the early nineties and has been an important part of the Danfoss Semco research and development team ever since. For one, Jens has been part of forming the important ground rules within fire fighting with water mist, especially high-pressure, including IMO (from 1994) and CEN (from 2007). In addition, Jens is honary member of IWMA (International Water Mist Association) due to his engagement in water mist. Finally, Jens is probably one of the people in the world who has performed the most fire tests with water mist. For Jens, a personal success was to be able to work with a product where the quality was the best and also had a place in the market. Also, it has always been important to create safety and satisfaction for the customer by finding solutions every day that he could vouch for. Jens Jepsen appreciates the good times he has had with the remarkable people from the business. When Jens retires he will spend time with his family, working on his house and summer house, and go fishing and hunting. We want to take this opportunity to thank Jens Jepsen for the extreme amount of work and dedication he has given our company throughout the years. We believe that the success of water mist very much if owed to the commitment of Jens Jepsen. We wish Jens Jepsen all the best in the future.

The German partner "Callies Brandbekämpfungsysteme GmbH" was among the first companies specializing in high-pressure water systems for land based applications.
In March 2016 Callies and Danfoss Semco reconfirmed the partnership by signing a new agreement. As one of the pioneers in high-pressure water systems for land based applications “Callies Brandbekämpfungsysteme GmbH” became a valuable partner back in 2004. (At this time to Semco Maritime as the predecessor for Danfoss Semco). Throughout the years Callies has been, and still is, a strong contributor to the growth and acceptance of our technology in a rather conservative fire fighting business segment. We highly value the efforts and commitment of Managing Director Oliver Callies and his team as a long standing and dedicated partner, says Mogens Jessen, Director, Water Mist Industrial & Commercial, Danfoss Semco.

Starting 2016 on a high note

In December 2015, the entire Danfoss Semco China team gathered together for a meeting far away from the daily office environment, in Sanya, a beautiful, tropical city situated on Hainan Island in Southeast China.
The meeting had two main objectives: to make a summary of activities in 2015 and to draft the objectives and upcoming events for 2016. With these two main topics in mind, the meeting was of great importance. It was an opportunity to gather all the lessons learned in 2015 and implement this knowledge into planning 2016, ensuring that the year would start on a high note. For 2016, the team has approached 4 subjects:
- Divide Danfoss Semco China into one division responsible for sales in the southern part of China and one division responsible for sales in the northern part of China. The purpose of this decision is to strengthen our networks of distributors and to reinforce our sales and marketing activities.
- The roles within the Danfoss Semco China organisation have been redefined to take advantage of staff skills and abilities.
- A completely new strategy called “Must Win Battles 2016” has been brainstormed to cover price management, sales strategy, market development and certificate target.
- Training within pipeline management.
The meeting was a success and all employees gained a good understanding of the goals and responsibilities within Danfoss Semco China. To ensure team cohesion, several sessions of the meeting in Sanya were allocated to team building, improving staff morale and enhancing skills. We have taken all the right steps towards a good start to 2016 and the team is confident that it will be a productive year.

Annual service in New Zealand
The Cruise Vessel Silver Discoverer needed an annual service on its Danfoss Semco system, the only challenge was they were in all the way in New Zealand, and they needed the service now! No trouble! Danfoss Semco mobilized its partner network and attended the vessel within 7 days. Not only did the team successfully complete the annual service on board but due to the lack of accommodation on board, the team drove the distance of the island ready to meet the vessel in it next harbor minimizing any passenger disruption.
The travel distance The journey was an experience for the service team as well as a successful annual service for the vessel. Both the captain and the service technicians have agreed to a closer harbor next year.

Danfoss Semco employee joins team Rynkeby!

Team Rynkeby is a Nordic charity cycling team. Every summer the team cycles to Paris to raise money for children with cancer and their families.
Team Rynkeby was founded in 2002, when 11 amateur cyclists associated with Rynkeby Foods A/S decided to cycle to Paris to see the final stage of the Tour de France. Rynkeby Foods was the main sponsor of their trip, which was also backed by other companies. Team Rynkeby donated their profits to the children's cancer unit at Odense University Hospital. A tradition was born!
1,600 cyclists in five countries Today’s Team Rynkeby comprises 1,600 cyclists and 400 volunteers, divided into 38 local teams in Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway and the Faroe Islands. Team members are selected from thousands of applicants.
Every penny helps children with cancer For almost a whole year participants must not only prepare themselves for the 1,200 kilometer trip to Paris but they are also obliged to do what they can to raise money for children with cancer and their families. Every penny that Team Rynkeby raises in each country goes to the local childhood cancer association in that country. In 2015, Team Rynkeby raised just over € 6.45 million to fight childhood cancer in Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway and the Faroe Islands.
Danfoss Semco employee part of team Rynkeby This year Danfoss Semco employee Lars Elkjær joins the Odense team and naturally Danfoss Semco supports the event as a gold sponsor, hence our logo can be found on the Odense team’s shirt. We are proud to be part of the charity work done by team Rynkeby and we wish Lars and the teams the best of luck!

Understanding the customer’s need is paramount
Have you ever wondered if anyone would have suggested developing a mountain bike to the dying bicycle sector years ago or if a customer would have told Apple to develop an IPAD? Not likely. Danfoss Semco wants to drive change in a very conservative market. To develop and introduce new ways to solve old challenges. This means we must cooperate closely with our customers, but we must also be prepared to challenge their assumptions. To push the boundaries and find solutions that are more effective, simpler and more cost effective. An example is the use of our low-pressure CO
2 systems in large container vessels. Nobody had done this before Maersk and Danfoss Semco introduced this on the Triple E vessels in 2013. Another example is the design of inverted or upright water mist nozzles for parking garages. Again Danfoss Semco is the first on the market. Throughout 2015 we have hosted a range of seminars across Europe for consultants, engineers and architects to introduce the water mist technology. To take the dialogue and develop a common understanding of the many benefits for building design and protection. We look forward to seeing many more during our 2016 seminars.
The latest seminar was located at Wembley stadium and was focused on "Benefits of high-pressure water mist systems in commercial applications"

Successful events in Big Ben’s city

November has proven to be an interesting and very busy month for the Danfoss Semco marketing and land department. In close collaboration with Fireworks Ltd., our distributor in the United Kingdom, we have organised two events targeting key contacts in the British market. On the 25th of November 2015, the Houses of Parliament was the incredible location chosen to host our first event. A select group of clients, together with key representatives from Danfoss Semco and Fireworks, enjoyed a tour of the Palace of Westminster, which is the meeting place of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, as well as a royal residence of the “Crown”. The tour was followed by a lovely dinner, networking and fantastic conversation. The day ended on a high note as we got the chance to visit the “Viewing Gallery” where we witnessed the Chancellor, George Osbourne deliver his autumn statement.
Great atmosphere at the end of the visit to the UK Houses of Parliament The second event took place the very next day
on the 26th of November at Wembley Stadium, a location that is so representative of the British love of sport and leisure. With more than 90,000 seats Wembley is the second largest stadium in Europe. It was a great honour to be able to hold our seminar in the same location that has hosted major sport events and where legendary voices, such as Michael Jackson and Tina Turner have been heard. The event focused on the “Benefits of High-Pressure Water Mist Systems in Commercial Applications” and there were more than 65 guests from different companies from all around the United Kingdom. The event received accreditation from the Institute of Fire Engineers. The seminar has proven to be a great learning opportunity concerning the advantages of using high-pressure water mist technology for fire fighting. The day ended with a grand tour of Wembley Stadium, which included access to the beautiful stadium pitch.

Strong Danfoss Semco representation at China Fire 2015 fair

The Danfoss Semco's portfolio at the China Fire 2015 fair has attracted many visitors interested in hearing about our innovative fire fighting technology. Representatives from both Danfoss Semco in Denmark and Danfoss Semco in Tianjin joined forces in a shared effort to exhibit at the 16
th International Fire Protection Equipment Exhibition in China, one of the largest fire protection exhibitions in China. The event is an important channel for various levels of fire officials to meet, but also a significant trade platform in the Asia-Pacific region.
Visitors to the Danfoss Semco stand got the opportunity to see real life demonstrations of the SEM-SAFE
® high-pressure water mist system, allowing them to get a good understanding of the excellent properties of high-pressure water mist technology for fire fighting. Water is forced through nozzles at high-pressure to form a super fine mist. This has a two-fold extinguishing effect. As well as cooling the fire like a traditional sprinkler, it simultaneously starves the fire of oxygen like gas systems do. Visitors were able to touch the water mist and learn how high-pressure water mist is completely safe for human beings. Our range of nozzles for various applications was exhibited at the fair, giving visitors the opportunity to see the advantage of using SEM-SAFE
® for fire protection in all areas and rooms of a building. China Fire 2015 was an excellent opportunity for Danfoss Semco to highlight its most recently acquired certification, the CCCF certificate, which makes Danfoss Semco the first manufacturer of water mist to attain CCCF approval. This adds to Danfoss Semco’s certificate portfolio, reassuring customers that we are a realiable, approved and original manufacturer of high-pressure water mist systems. We would like to thank the many people who visited our stand and express our appreciation for their interest in Danfoss Semco products.

The first water mist producer in China to have CCCF approval
Published 5 November 2015
Outstanding quality and performance is crucial for Danfoss Semco… View
Outstanding quality and performance is crucial for Danfoss Semco and is reflected in all of our products. Only in this way is it possible to keep our customers satisfied and ensure the best possible fire fighting system. Our efforts to manufacture a reliable and safe product have paid off yet again. We are very proud to announce that our SEM-SAFE
® high-pressure water mist system for fire fighting has passed all the tests and quality management criteria demanded by the audit of China Mandatory Approval.
This makes Danfoss Semco the first manufacturer to gain a CCCF Mandatory Certificate. Having a professional R&D team, solid technical support as well as full control over the production of our key components, has put Danfoss Semco in a unique leading position in the Chinese market for years to come.
From September 2014, all water mist products have been included in the directory of mandatory certified products. This means that all the original voluntary certificates had to be changed to mandatory certificates before the end of August 2015. Danfoss Semco worked closely with TFRI (Tianjin Fire Research Institute of Ministry of Public Security) and was the first to hand in the mandatory certification application. During the product testing, SEM-SAFE
® high-pressure water mist system got a high degree of recognition from TFRI. In September 2015, Danfoss Semco received the CCCF mandatory certificate. “A h
igh quality product is the foundation for market development. To abide by the rules of healthy market development is our principle, we will commit ourselves to holding the leading position in the Chinese market for high-pressure water mist systems for fire fighting” explains Ms. Jiang Jijian, VP of Danfoss SEMCO China. We want to be an attractive workplace

Showing your workplace to your children during our “follow dad/mom to work” day.
Having highly motivated employees is an important part of running a successful company. The days where job security was the primary concern are long gone. It is paramount for employees to feel that working for us is more than a job. One aspect is for their families to better understand what we at Danfoss Semco do. Like many other workplaces, we have a high number of parents with small children. All Danish school children have fall holiday during week 42, so we combined the situation of children being off school with the possibility to introduce our company to the smaller family members. More than 14 employees brought a total of 23 children to spent a full day with one of their parents at Danfoss Semco. The children spent time at the workplace of their parent and were shown their everyday work. And everyone had an introduction to our production and products. Naturally we also had time to play with LEGO, watch Disney movies and enjoy free soft ice. Working at Danfoss Semco should be more than simply a job and your family should also understand how you play an important role for company.

Danfoss Semco wins prestigious design award

Our focus on innovation is rewarded as Danfoss Semco wins “Produktprisen” at the annual DI Business Summit.
Innovation is at the core of Danfoss Semco DNA. We must constantly strive to develop new products that improve safety for our customers across the world.
Innovation is not just products. It comprises all aspects of our fire fighting solutions. We strive to design superior products, which enable simpler system design and operation. This lowers the life cycle cost for owners and also ensures that the crew feels confident when operating our system.
An example of our approach is the new SEM-SAFE
®Bilge nozzle that has just been awarded “Produktprisen 2015”. The prize is given by the Confederation of Danish Industry (DI) to companies that develop superior customer focused products. Using our Bilge nozzle enables us to design a single technology system i.e. there is no need for a foam system in the bilge area and we can avoid using lethal CO
2 in the engine room. To the owner and crew this means increased time at sea, as the system is always ready to use (no need to return to harbor to refill foam or CO
2 after a release), and faster fire fighting as the crew is more confident with a safer and simpler technology. See the award ceremony and winner's speech

We do as Maersk. Invest heavily when times are tough to be ready when the market picks up again
Many companies are starting to see the end of the financial crisis. This may be true in the construction business where Danfoss Semco has seen very high growth over the last three years, but the marine business is still struggling. Our company has a track record of continuously investing in new product development and approvals. An example is our bilge nozzle launched in 2014. We are still the only company in the world that has an approved nozzle that can cover a bilge height up to 1.5m and hence provide a totally water based firefighting system for most vessels. 2015 will continue this trend with a record investment in our future. We are expanding our R&D department, we are conducting the highest number of fire tests ever and we expect to introduce even more products in 2015 and 2016. We trust this further strengthen Danfoss Semco as the preferred provider for engineering design companies, owners and shipyards.

Precious little diamond

Danfoss Semco high-pressure water mist systems are especially suitable for a wide range of highly specialized “work intensive” vessels. These vessels are characterized by functional design adapted to their purpose; research, pipe laying, safety standby, support, anchor handling or other functions. The common denominator for these vessels is high utilization rate of all available spaces. Danfoss Semco high-pressure water mist unit is designed with special attention to this segment. A high performance skid mounted pump unit with minimal footprint. The latest newcomer to the Danfoss Semco group of clients within the segment of specialized vessels is Debmarine Namibia, one of the world´s leading marine diamond mining companies. After a heavy and costly engine room fire in 2013, Debmarine Namibia decided that CO
2 total engine room protection was to be supported by high-pressure water mist local application. The reason: a means to control or completely extinguish an engine room fire within minutes. From 2013 until now, Danfoss Semco local application systems are found onboard almost all De Beers mining vessels. Remaining vessels will be updated throughout 2015 and 2016. We are proud to have been chosen as the trusted supplier for the De Beers Group. Meeting the rigid safety requirements of the De Beers Group is recognition of Danfoss Semco high-pressure water mist systems.

Danfoss Semco participated in the
11th Shanghai International Fire & Security Technology Equipment Exhibition (Fire & Security Shanghai 2014) held Nov. 9-11 at Shanghai Exhibition Center in the world famous downtown CBD area. The Exhibition is the largest specialised fire exhibition in China in 2014 and was supported and organised by Shanghai Fire Department. At the Danfoss Semco booth it was our pump unit, together with other key components, which attracted the visitors. In October 2014 we obtained CCCF certificates for all system types to be installed in the Chinese market. The exhibition was an excellent opportunity to make this public to the visitors. Our partners in the Shanghai area, ICAN and JWTA, contributed largely to a successful exhibition, both in all preparations and by handling visitors very professionally throughout all 3 days.

Meet the CEO
Published 4 December 2014
Dear Customer, Being successful in today’s fast paced… View
Dear Customer, Being successful in today’s fast paced environment requires a transformation of the way we do business. At Danfoss Semco, and in the fire fighting business in general, we are faced with an interesting dilemma. Our industry has safety as the number one objective, both in terms of protecting human life and safeguarding material assets. This leads to a very conservative approach and thus slow adoption of new technology and processes. Our water mist technology offers a long list of benefits to both designers, architects and installers on top of the significantly shorter down time in case of fire due to low water damage. Likewise our customers see many operational advantages in changing from high-pressure CO
2 systems to low-pressure CO
2 systems. But offering the best products and solutions on the market is not sufficient to succeed. To gain customer loyalty we must also be the best in our day-to-day interaction with you our customers. To Danfoss Semco this means that we must be
EASY TO DO BUSINESS WITH. Easy to do business with means that all business transactions are fast and simple and we meet or exceed your expectations in terms of both quality and delivery. In 2015 we are implementing many new processes and tools to support our ambition. The first step is the launch of our new portal where user friendliness has been the most important design parameter. I hope you will enjoy our new website and look forward to doing business with you.

SMM (Ship Building, Machinery & Marine Technology) is the world’s leading maritime trade fair with more than 2,100 exhibitors from all around the world and more than 50,000 visitors. Danfoss Semco’s participation at the SMM 2014 exhibition was a success. This was the perfect event to share with our visitors and guests insights for the latest product development:
- Innovative low-pressure CO2 systems for large engine rooms and cargo holds
- Bilge area fire fighting (replacement of foam with a SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist system)
