Throwback to an eventful last week at the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) Performance-Based Design (PBD) Conference and Exhibition in Copenhagen, Denmark. This premier event gathered 300 fire professionals and enthusiasts to discuss new fire safety technologies, methods, processes, and materials for safer buildings. During the event, we were incredibly sad to witness Børsen, the old Stock Exchange House and one of Denmark’s most iconic and historic buildings, burn into flames. The 400-year-old building was well recognized in the Copenhagen skyline, due to its dragon-tailed spire. This unfortunate event reinforces the importance of protecting historical buildings with reliable fire safety solutions. Forums, like the ones provided by SFPE, are thus essential to sharing knowledge and taking action. During the SFPE congress, we tackled the benefits behind our SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist solution for key applications, such as heritage, hospitals, mass timber buildings, tunnels, and parking garages with electric vehicles, to name just a few. High-pressure water mist – suitable for modern data centre cooling methods

    Published 22 April 2024

If you design data centres, you will have… View

Danfoss Fire Safety Data CentreIf you design data centres, you will have noticed that facilities are getting bigger – and hotter. As a result, data centre cooling is evolving towards new techniques that provide effective, sustainable, and cost-effective cooling that maintains the right temperature, even as server rack power continues to grow. But no matter which cooling technology is used at the facility, high-pressure water mist systems are evolving too in order to continue to provide efficient fire suppression and thus remains the key to optimal fire safety design in any data centre.

    Growing industry, growing demands

The data centre industry is growing rapidly – as are the demands placed on it. The increasing adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), cloud services, edge computing, and the Internet of Things (IoT) means that the need for storage space and processing power is skyrocketing. Server racks are getting more powerful, but their increasing power density also means higher rack temperatures. At the same time, data centre owners and operators need to minimise operating costs and reduce power consumption as much as possible to minimise the climate impact of their systems to comply with client expectations and sustainability legislation.

    Evolution driven by power density

Adopting new cooling techniques is a good solution to these challenges. Liquid cooling such as direct-to-chip cooling and immersion cooling offers high performance plus efficiency improvements that can increase power usage effectiveness (PUE) and reduce climate impact. This evolution is largely driven by increasing power density: With the more powerful, and hotter, server racks being deployed, traditional air cooling including CRAC (computer room air conditioning) and CRAH (computer room air handling) in many cases is no longer sufficient. Liquid cooling, by contrast, offers the required performance.
    • In direct-to-chip cooling, small pipes deliver liquid coolant directly to the server motherboard. The liquid absorbs processor heat which is then transported out of the server and evaporated (using a chilled-water loop or similar).
    • In immersion cooling, the server itself is submerged into liquid coolant, for example mineral oil or another dielectric liquid. The coolant is pumped through an evaporator system, efficiently removing the heat from the server hardware.

    Varying risk profiles

But how exactly do cooling methods affect fire protection? Do they make any difference? It depends on how the data centre is designed. Data centre designers take many different approaches to cooling depending on their targets, and the risk profile depends very much on the actual design in each case. A couple of examples:
    • If air cooling is used, how are the airflows designed? Does the cooling system use forced ventilation, and does it use hot and cold aisles? What role do the airflows play in a fire – and how do you design a fire suppression system that delivers the required performance in each case?
    • If the data centre relies on immersion cooling, what liquid is being used? Some dielectric fluids have a flash point low enough for them to constitute a fire hazard. And what would happen if unforeseen events or mechanical failure were to result in liquid leakage or heating?
In any case, the increased temperatures in modern data centres constitutes an increased risk. If the cooling system fails, today’s high-powered data centre server racks will quickly rise to higher temperatures, increasing the risk of asset breakdowns – and of fire. [caption id="attachment_14372" align="alignnone" width="700"]FM Approvals data centre halls - below floor double tier cable trays fire test[/caption]

    High-pressure water mist remains effective

Fortunately, the wide variety of cooling technologies and general design principles doesn’t have to give the fire safety designer sleepless nights: In a changing data centre industry, high-pressure water mist systems remain a reliable method for suppressing data centre fires. When activated, a high-pressure water mist system emits a fine mist of water droplets through a localised section of nozzles. The droplets attack two elements of the fire triangle, removing both oxygen and heat and combining the suppression effect of gas and traditional sprinkler systems. In data centre applications, high-pressure water mist has several benefits over gas or sprinklers. It uses less water, reducing damage to data centre assets. Only the nozzles in the affected area are activated, further reducing water consumption. And because the system uses only clean water, it is harmless to humans, and excess water can quickly be removed after a fire, shortening downtime. The physical properties of high-pressure water mist systems mean that they are capable of handling any type of data centre fire. This applies to all commercially available solutions that conform to the FM 5560 Approval Standard for Water Mist Systems (Appendix M and N), and some manufacturers go beyond that basic requirement. The nozzles of the SEM-SAFE® system from Danfoss Fire Safety, for example, have been tested and approved for higher nozzle release temperatures, allowing for an increase in the ambient temperature within the data halls. This reduces demand on the cooling system and minimises cooling system energy consumption significantly.  As new cooling methods introduce these challenges in fire protection, whether that be from increase air velocities, liquid cooling, or higher temperatures, Danfoss Fire Safety works with third parties to evaluate its solutions, such as tests from FM 5560 Data Centre tests (Appendix M and N) and additional fire tests with RISE Fire Research in Norway.

    Additional benefits with future-proof technology

In addition to reliable fire suppression, high-pressure water mist systems provide other benefits to the fire system designer, installer, and data centre operator: The small pipe size and compact pump units typically used make the solutions easy to integrate and install. And their low water and reduction in raw materials makes them a good match for clients looking to reduce their climate footprint. You may find yourself faced with many different rack space and cooling system designs, and with the need to design and install fire protection systems that deliver satisfactory performance for all of them. High-pressure water mist has been an excellent choice for fire extinguishing systems in data centres for years. As the industry evolves to tackle new challenges and client demands, the technology remains the key to ensuring adequate fire safety. What is SEM-SAFE®  system for fire protection

SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist systems are suitable for protecting an entire mission-critical data facility, including double tier cable trays, data processing equipment rooms or halls, and sub-floors.

In addition, SEM-SAFE® systems comprise a high-pressure modular pump unit, section valves, piping, and water mist nozzles. The pump unit has a compact design, low weight, small footprint and an easy configuration to fit the data center’s need for expansion.

Moreover the SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water systems use water micro-droplets released through the nozzle into protected areas. An ultra-fine mist is formed with a two-fold extinguishing effect. In addition to cooling the flames, it simultaneously starves the fire of oxygen. The cooling effect also lowers the risk of re-ignition, protects against heat damage, and hinders fire spreading.

On 1st June 2020, our dear colleague Peter M. Knudsencelebrated 25 years of working in our company. In August, we organised a small reception, which gave us the opportunity to express how much we value Peter as a colleague and recognize the contributions he continues to make. Hard working, loyal, knowledgeable, fair, with a strong work ethic. These are just a few words that describe Peter. For a quarter of a century, Peter has been active in the promotion and sale of the technology he truly believes can make a difference in fire safety; high-pressure water mist. His vast experience makes Peter a mentor, who we often go to for training and guidance in Danfoss Fire Safety. We thank Peter for a great collaboration, and we look forward to many more years of working with water mist projects. “Really overwhelmed by the many compliments I received in connection with my 25-year anniversary – thanks to Danfoss, truly a great company to be working for.”Peter M. Thus, a dedicated separate piping network is not needed. This means less time is spent on piping work, planning and installation as well as fewer components need to be installed on-site.

The SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist system and the SEM-SAFE® fire hose reel cabinet with spray gun  can share the same pump unit, leaving more space for other money generating activities.

One technology serves all fire safety needs in the building,  making installation, maintenance and service easier to perform.

  • “Click” solution for SEM-SAFE® nozzle installation

    Published 2 April 2020

The SEM-SAFE® nozzle installation kit has been developed… View

The SEM-SAFE® nozzle installation kit has been developed to fit the SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist nozzle and is compatible with a variety of ceiling types. It is suitable for drop-hose installation and fixed piping. It allows for easy installation and servicing of nozzles.

The SEM-SAFE® nozzle installation kit can be used for the following purposes:

    • simply covering the nozzle or
    • installing the nozzle in the ceiling, while also ensuring nozzle coverage

Simplicity and ease of use were key parameters in developing this solution. With the help of magnets fitted to the clamp disc, the cover plate simply ‘clicks’ and covers the installation area.

By using the nozzle installation kit, the SEM-SAFE® nozzle can be installed last and the pressure testing can be done before the nozzle is finally installed in the ceiling. With this installation solution, any maintenance and inspection as well as alteration to the ceiling can be done without interfering with the high-pressure water mist nozzle and system, thereby saving time on installation and maintenance significantly.

The "click" solution kit includes 3 main components:

    Clamp disc
    - to be installed around the nozzle neck. The clamp disc is designed as a multi bracket, to utilize for both installing nozzles with screws and for installing nozzle with "spider" weldment functionality.

Cover plate - clicks on clamp disc to cover the nozzle installation area.

    "Spider" weldment
    - needed when screws can not be used for installation. Supports installation from the top side of the ceiling.

    Published 28 October 2019

Fun, networking and solid business relationships are key… View

Fun, networking and solid business relationships are key ingredients for a successful Danfoss Fire Safety Partner Seminar The Danfoss Fire Safety Partner Seminar took place from 15 to 16 October 2019 in Poland. It was our pleasure to welcome 80 participants representing 28 Partner companies from 23 countries. At Danfoss Fire Safety, we call our distributors from the “land” market (buildings & industry) ‘Partners’. The seminar is a platform for sharing news with our Partners, getting direct feedback from them, but it is also a great way to socialize and have some fun. Day 1 took place at the Danfoss Grodzisk Mazowiecki Poland office.Adam Jedrzejczak, President of Danfoss EER Region, gave us an insight into the “muscle” power behind Danfoss. Our R&D department released a brand-new 3D Product Configurator Tool. The tool is embedded in our www.semsafe.danfoss.com homepage. It offers a simple and transparent product portfolio. The 3D models are available 24/7 with accurate dimensions and comprehensive, up-to-date technical data. With this tool, we are truly putting digitalisation at the fingertips of our Partners by giving them the possibility to configure and preview the product with a single click. Partners can use it together with their own customers, for example architects, for a full hands-on digital experience. Day 2 took place in Warsaw, where we saw the installation of the SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist system in the Varso high-rise building, an iconic landmark in Warsaw, currently under construction. Once completed, Varso tower will be the tallest building in Poland and the European Union. We are extremely proud that our SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist system ensures optimum fire safety of people and assets in this impressive building. For more information about Varso tower, please visit the Varso homepage. Passion for the fire safety business and the people behind it is the driver motivating us to create this kind of event. The first Partner Seminar was organised in 2010 and since then it has become an annual event, lasting 2 days. During this seminar. we get the chance to meet face-to-face with the Partners we speak to on a daily basis. This has a positive impact on our communication with Partners, creates strong business relationships and enables the exchange of information. Thank you to our Partners for participating! For more information about the seminar, please contact Maria Salcudean, Marketing Manager: mes@danfoss.com For more information about the Product Configurator Tool, please contact Axel Lund Henriksen, R&D Manager Systems & Units: alh@danfoss.com

July proved to be a busy, yet productive month for Danfoss Fire Safety A/S.  We are very glad to have completed another successful training seminar focused on operation and maintenance of SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist systems.  Peter M. Knudsen, Market Solution Manager & Leader in our SEM-SAFE® Academy Training Program is very satisfied with the outcome of the recent training. "We just completed a successful 2-day partner service engineer training seminar in our headquarters in Odense, Denmark. There were 8 service engineers participating from 7 of our great partners in Europe; MARANG Brandschutz & Technologie GmbH, and Multimon Industrieanlagen GmbH from Germany, Dunamenti from Hungary, Unica Fire Safety from the Netherlands, Fireworks from the UK, Automatic Fire from Ireland and GM sprinkler from Poland. We covered much of the huge “Operation & Maintenance” subject, a lot about control of the pump unit, details and function of each tiny Danfoss component, and changing of the high-pressure pumps in a unit. The immediate feedback we received from our enthusiastic, and indeed interesting, participants was overwhelming... thank you all for that!", says Peter M. Knudsen.

  • Best fire suppression system for Data Centre

    Published 26 February 2019

Technological advances in fire suppression for data centres… View

Technological advances in fire suppression for data centres over the last 20 years mean that gas & chemical-based solutions developments are becoming obsolete. Amongst their disadvantages are the facts that they usually involve releasing chemicals over a wide area and require ventilation systems to be shut down to remove oxygen. Electrical supply often has to be cut & clean-up operations take time. Staff safety, damage limitation & the amount of downtime are all major disadvantages with these traditional solutions. More & more data centres have therefore been turning to high-pressure water mist solutions. These systems comprise a tailor-made network of nozzles, which release micro-fine particles of water exactly at the point of the incident. While the localised fire is quickly extinguished, the remainder of the data centre’s operations and equipment remain unaffected & can be kept up & running.  The solution is completely harmless to staff and equipment & clean up is swift.

High pressure water mist fire suppression - how it works

The key benefit of high-pressure water mist fire suppression solutions are the extremely low levels of water used. Using a high-pressure pump, clean water is forced through a specially designed, tested network of stainless steel pipework and nozzles at 60 or 100bar. The microfine water droplets emitted have sizes ranging from 50 to 200 µm. They quickly vaporise to cool and extinguish the fire, by displacing the oxygen around the fire zone. With this localised response, only the nozzle at the affected point is triggered and hardly any trace of water remains after activation. The area does not need to be sealed in the same way that a gas suppression system requires and ventilation does not need to be turned off. Energy supply and business operations can continue as usual.

    Proven experience in data centres

Danfoss is a global leader in the sale, development, production and service/commissioning of certified fixed fire fighting systems under the brand name SEM-SAFE®. Innovation is our approach. Our SEM-SAFE® system for data centres uses high-pressure water mist. We have been engineering and pioneering SEM-SAFE® fire fighting systems for decades and have successfully designed and installed systems in major data centres.

Better fire protection for metros and suburbain rail

Our society is characterized by a transportation system that expands daily, contributing to our modern living. In some of the biggest metro stations in the world, millions of people transit every hour. In such crowded places, ensuring people’s safety can be a challenge. The passengers only transit the area, most of them without knowledge on what are the fire escape procedures. Metros are also poorly ventilated, which can easily lead to radiant heat and smoke being amplified. It is a prerequisite for metros to be equipped with a reliable fire protection system that will make evacuation of people possible and facilitate the access for the fire fighting crew. Rigorous tests have proven that SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist system is the optimum fire fighting system for protecting these critical transit areas.  Marton Horvath, Country Manager at Danfoss Fire Fighting, presented the test results and benefits of SEM-SAFE® for metro stations and suburban rail at the RIFA Annual General Meeting.

Danfoss Fire Fighting attends RIFA Annual General Meeting

RIFA (Rail Industry Fire Association) Annual General Meeting was held on the 14th of July 2017 in London. The main objective of RIFA is that of knowledge and best practice sharing in the field of fire safety for the railway industry. As a voice for norms concerning fire safety, the association's annual meeting serves as a platform for experts to meet and discuss fire safety. The event was very well attended and included a number of presentations and a fire test in the Burn Hall. Marton Horvath has chosen as a case study the famous Budapest Metro system, which is protected by a SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist system. Fire test for cable tunnels and under carriage space protection demonstrated the excellent properties and benefits of SEM-SAFE®. • Danfoss Semco & TFRI demonstrates the use of WM in heritage buildings

    Published 25 November 2016

Danfoss Semco and their local partner NDN have,… View

Danfoss Semco and their local partner NDN have, in close collaboration with the Tianjin Fire Research Institute of the Ministry of Public Security, established a demonstration mock-up for heritage buildings. The site is located at the TFRI fire testing center in Tianjin, China. Parameters such as activation time, spray pattern and water consumption can easily be demonstrated to fire marshals, design institutes and other government bodies. Overall, the test illustrates that the SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist system from Danfoss Semco is the optimal fire-fighting solution for heritage applications. Most buildings classified as heritage buildings were constructed before the time of fire codes and contain highly combustible materials. Wood structures are always a concern and have a high fire risk. High-pressure water mist is increasingly in demand for protecting these sensitive applications. The tests performed are the result of the need to maximize the fire safety of valuable structures.

    Safe and reliable

The SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist system activates immediately upon fire detection. It is harmless to humans and uses a 100% environmentally friendly extinguishing agent.

Perfect for retrofit projects and wood structures

The SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist system uses high-quality stainless steel pipes that have a small diameter. They are light and can easily be bent to fit in tight spaces. The SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist nozzles have an aesthetic design that fits with historical and modern design interiors.

    Limited water consumption

Due to the minimum water consumption, the SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist system weighs very little. This makes it possible to install the system in areas where only lightweight systems can be used. Also, in cases of activation, the water damage is kept to a minimum. heritage-test-cn

Extensive track record for heritage buildings in Europe

In Europe, Danfoss Semco has an extensive track record of SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist installations in heritage buildings, such as: the Budapest Parliament in Hungary, Comparto San Paolo Modena historical library in Italy, Teatro Comunale Ponchielli Cremona in Italy, Havnbjerg Mølle mill museum in Denmark, Gamle Gård Kristiansand museum in Norway, Ten Trinity Square in London, United Kingdom. Tianjin Fire Research Institute (TFRI) The Tianjin Fire Research Institute of the Ministry of Public Security (TFRI), established in 1965, is a comprehensive and internationally famous fire science research institute, which has professional staff capable of independent innovation and a top-ranking, comprehensive test base. The research areas of TFRI include building fire protection and prevention technology, fire engineering technology, fire theory research, fire-cause analysis and determination, fire code and standardization, fire testing technologies and soft-science fire research, etc. To learn more about TFRI, click here.

Spring of 2016 has proven to be very busy for Danfoss Semco in China. Danfoss Semco was an active participant and key note presenter at the “Annual Conference of Shanghai Architectural Society of Building Water Supply & Drainage Branch”. The Architectural Society of Shanghai China is an academic society founded in 1953, which brings together construction experts from all sorts of branches. The conferences organized by the association are very well known in East China. This year the event took place in the Shanghai Modern Design Institute, attracting elite architects, structural engineers and various building suppliers. Fire fighting in buildings was among the “hot” topics on this year’s program. The main objective of Danfoss Semco was to convince an audience of more than 200 people of the benefits of the SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist system for fire fighting in any type of building. Mission accomplished! The event was a success. Mr Michal Zhang, general manager of ICAN Shanghai, one of Danfoss Semco’s official distributors in China, introduced the SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist system as one of the most advanced fire fighting technologies. Besides being a reliable system, the SEM-SAFE® system respects the integrity of a building. Putting out the fire in seconds, without using any chemical additives and with minimal consumption of water and close to no water damage, it is one of the most environmentally-friendly and efficient fire fighting systems available, and is totally safe for human beings. The presentations and discussions that took place during the seminar have led to a high interest in high-pressure water mist. As a results several more seminars and trainings are already being discussed, where Danfoss Semco can take the opportunity to explain the details behind the high–pressure water mist technology and present the track record of projects where SEM-SAFE® has been installed worldwide. After working with water mist from the very beginning, Jens Jepsen has decided to retire at the end of April 2016.

Jens Jepsen started developing the SEM-SAFE® water mist system in the early nineties and has been an important part of the Danfoss Semco research and development team ever since. For one, Jens has been part of forming the important ground rules within fire fighting with water mist, especially high-pressure, including IMO (from 1994) and CEN (from 2007). In addition, Jens is honary member of IWMA (International Water Mist Association) due to his engagement in water mist. Finally, Jens is probably one of the people in the world who has performed the most fire tests with water mist. For Jens, a personal success was to be able to work with a product where the quality was the best and also had a place in the market. Also, it has always been important to create safety and satisfaction for the customer by finding solutions every day that he could vouch for. Jens Jepsen appreciates the good times he has had with the remarkable people from the business. When Jens retires he will spend time with his family, working on his house and summer house, and go fishing and hunting. We want to take this opportunity to thank Jens Jepsen for the extreme amount of work and dedication he has given our company throughout the years. We believe that the success of water mist very much if owed to the commitment of Jens Jepsen. We wish Jens Jepsen all the best in the future. IMG_4528

The German partner "Callies Brandbekämpfungsysteme GmbH" was among the first companies specializing in high-pressure water systems for land based applications.

In March 2016 Callies and Danfoss Semco reconfirmed the partnership by signing a new agreement. As one of the pioneers in high-pressure water systems for land based applications “Callies Brandbekämpfungsysteme GmbH” became a valuable partner back in 2004.  (At this time to Semco Maritime as the predecessor for Danfoss Semco). Throughout the years Callies has been, and still is, a strong contributor to the growth and acceptance of our technology in a rather conservative fire fighting business segment. In December 2015, the entire Danfoss Semco China team gathered together for a meeting far away from the daily office environment, in Sanya, a beautiful, tropical city situated on Hainan Island in Southeast China. Group (3) The meeting had two main objectives: to make a summary of activities in 2015 and to draft the objectives and upcoming events for 2016. With these two main topics in mind, the meeting was of great importance. It was an opportunity to gather all the lessons learned in 2015 and implement this knowledge into planning 2016, ensuring that the year would start on a high note. For 2016, the team has approached 4 subjects:
    • Divide Danfoss Semco China into one division responsible for sales in the southern part of China and one division responsible for sales in the northern part of China. The purpose of this decision is to strengthen our networks of distributors and to reinforce our sales and marketing activities.
    • The roles within the Danfoss Semco China organisation have been redefined to take advantage of staff skills and abilities.
    • A completely new strategy called “Must Win Battles 2016” has been brainstormed to cover price management, sales strategy, market development and certificate target.
    • Training within pipeline management.
The meeting was a success and all employees gained a good understanding of the goals and responsibilities within Danfoss Semco China. To ensure team cohesion, several sessions of the meeting in Sanya were allocated to team building, improving staff morale and enhancing skills. We have taken all the right steps towards a good start to 2016 and the team is confident that it will be a productive year. Teambuilding 1

The Danfoss Semco's portfolio at the China Fire 2015 fair has attracted many visitors interested in hearing about our innovative fire fighting technology. Representatives from both Danfoss Semco in Denmark and Danfoss Semco in Tianjin joined forces in a shared effort to exhibit at the 16th International Fire Protection Equipment Exhibition in China, one of the largest fire protection exhibitions in China. The event is an important channel for various levels of fire officials to meet, but also a significant trade platform in the Asia-Pacific region. DSC_1602 Visitors to the Danfoss Semco stand got the opportunity to see real life demonstrations of the SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist system, allowing them to get a good understanding of the excellent properties of high-pressure water mist technology for fire fighting. Water is forced through nozzles at high-pressure to form a super fine mist. This has a two-fold extinguishing effect. As well as cooling the fire like a traditional sprinkler, it simultaneously starves the fire of oxygen like gas systems do. Visitors were able to touch the water mist and learn how high-pressure water mist is completely safe for human beings. Our range of nozzles for various applications was exhibited at the fair, giving visitors the opportunity to see the advantage of using SEM-SAFE® for fire protection in all areas and rooms of a building. China Fire 2015 was an excellent opportunity for Danfoss Semco to highlight its most recently acquired certification, the CCCF certificate, which makes Danfoss Semco the first manufacturer of water mist to attain CCCF approval. This adds to Danfoss Semco’s certificate portfolio, reassuring customers that we are a realiable, approved and original manufacturer of high-pressure water mist systems. We would like to thank the many people who visited our stand and express our appreciation for their interest in Danfoss Semco products.
