When built, Carmen was the largest car carrier in the world, with a capacity of almost 8,000 cars. As is customary, the engine room and car decks are protected by a low-pressure CO2 system. Danfoss Semco has a long standing relationship with Wallenius Wilhelmsen, and therefore we were invited to provide the fire-fighting system for this series of five vessels. Nobody wishes to ever use this system, but even after 35 years on board a vessel, you need to feel confident that the system will work in case of a fire. This is the reason why many ship owners all over the world look to Danfoss Semco for low-pressure CO2.

The emergency Rescue and Recovery vessel “Esvagt Aurora” is protected with a SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist system. The system protects the engine room with both a total flooding and a local application system. In addition to the class requirements, a diesel back up system for emergency operation in case of total black-out has been developed in close cooperation with Esvagt. The SEM-SAFE® system was put to the test in October 2012 when fire broke out due to leaking marine diesel oil from a hot exhaust pipe of one of the diesel gensets. The crew released the SEM-SAFE® system and in less than 2 minutes, the fire was extinguished. After the fire was extinguished, the vessel sailed to port, although it could easily have continued operations without jeopardising the safety of vessel and passenger crew. Read the case story here
